we bought a house!

we are homeowners officially! after five years here, my husband, josh and i finally bought the house we have been living in. this house has been very precious to me for my whole life, as it was my beloved grandparent’s home and the home my father grew up in. i grew up playing here in the creek and had many holidays around the table together with family. now, this house has become equally important to my husband, and he has fallen for it (the dogs also!) it is a special place.

i am so excited to share more here on the blog as we dream, plan, and renovate the property. as a designer and architect, we can’t help but have big plans on paper already. we look forward to sharing the process and making many (more) years of memories here. it seems like a fitting week to close and be thankful for all that we’ve been given!

follow along on instagram and my renovation pinterest board, if you’d like.

home tour: jenni kayne

when i came across fashion designer jenni kayne’s beverly hills home tour on architectural digest, i knew immediately it would go in the ‘dream home’ file. the modern clean lines, the soaring wood ceilings, the custom millwork, and the steel frame windows won me over. i will be referencing this one as we design our new home. hope you enjoy!

midcentury modern for chairish

mid century for chairish | madeline made

i am still mourning the loss of my beloved mad men this week. did you watch? when chairish asked me to put together some of my favorite pieces from their mid-century collection, i immediately thought of the interiors of the 60’s and how they informed why i became a designer. when in design school, i admired 60’s icon couple charles and ray eames and their love for primary colors. their color palette and designs are timeless and still relevant today. i love that chairish has so many authentic designer pieces that can be used in all styles.

check out my favorites picks here from chairish and sources below. the eames documentary (the architect and the painter) is wonderful and you can see their home was full of color and life.

i have lots to tell and excited to share about my new nephew, business, and projects. happy memorial day weekend. madeline

moodboard inspiration

how amazing are these mood boards from emily henderson’s blog for the ban.do headquarters? these were put together by jen gotch as inspiration for the space. so colorful. so fun. so unconventional. and so dolly parton. that’s all. see the most recent update on the house here.

woodland nursery progress

woodland nursery | madeline made

in january, when visiting my sister in houston, our main goal was to get the nursery ready for the arrival of their first baby in march. her ideas for the nursery were all centered around woodland creatures, buffalo check, and outdoors. the nursery is inspired by her husband who is a true ‘man’s man,’ a skilled woodworker and outdoorsman. it was really fun to share a pinboard over the past eight months to pull ideas. here are some of her progress photos.

josh and i made a mobile (based on the one from etsy’s redbirdshop). this is the one she picked out and we figured we could make one for our nephew that would be just as meaningful.

some of the weekend was spent painting a dresser and changing table for the nursery with annie sloan chalk paint. we decided on the napoleonic blue paint with dark and clear wax. we changed out the hardware for some brass knobs. the dark wax darkened the paint into a pretty navy. i am excited to share more pictures when it is done. mostly, i am thrilled to be an aunt! we can’t wait to meet you, little one!

p.s. on a sad note, yesterday i had to say goodbye to my cat of 22 years, sky. she passed away in the morning after having a rough couple of days. i got sky when i was 6 years old and she was always the sweetest, most beautiful blue-eyed girl. i am so sad to say goodbye to her, but so thankful that my family had her in our lives for so long. life is not perfect, it’s actually quite hard, but there is no option, but to be grateful for every day.

interiors : best of mad men

with the premiere of the final season of mad men sunday, i have been thinking on how far it has come in the past 6 seasons. this show was the beginning of my love for great television…(AMC, amirite?) the direction has stayed on point with the cultural references and fashions, and i am looking forward to what this season will bring. the writing still gives me chills, like the opening scene in the premier of don on the moving sidewalk reminiscent of the same scene in the graduate. let’s take a look back at all time favorite mad men interiors…

there is no lack of eames, knoll, saarinen, and herman miller in claudette didul’s designs. the sets have evolved with the culture and plot and have ushered mad men into the 1970’s.

what is your favorite mad men interior from the past six seasons…

have you seen the new episode? and will you be watching this season?

grand budapest interiors

have you seen this wonderful website, wes anderson palettes

we are going to see wes anderson’s new movie, the grand budapest hotel this week and i am so excited. i have always been interested in set design and am feeling so inspired by the imagery and palettes in this film. anderson always creates incredible worlds within his stories (and he loves symmetry, like me.) apparently the film is set in a fictional country, zubrowka, so he literally created his own world in this case. the film sets were created in  former german department store! there is always a consistent color story in his films – some create nostalgia, some create whimsy, all of them surreal – a world more colorful than the real world. the colors of the interiors are also reminiscent of spring and the pastel pastries in the film…
